Position Summary

United Way of Central Indiana recognizes that the key to success is a strong and cohesive team that works through shared values to achieve our mission. The Foundation and Government Partnerships Senior Director is responsible for cultivating and engaging foundation and government partners in understanding and supporting the strategies and programs of United Way of Central Indiana.  The outcome of engaging with these higher-level partners will lead to a growth in the portfolio of grants from the government and foundations. This role leads one direct report and serves on the Fundraising and Engagement Department leadership team.


 Position Duties & Responsibilities

•   Develop annual fundraising strategy encompassing local and national prospects, timelines, key cultivation events/dates and strategic approaches.

•   Build direct relationships with national and local philanthropic funders and continually cultivate those relationships to secure resources. This includes foundation and government.

•   Advocate and articulate United Way's funding needs and value proposition to government and foundation constituents.

•   Conduct on-going research to identify funding sources for United Way programming.

•   Increase the number of new funding partnerships aligned to the United Way strategic plan priorities.

•   Collaborate with content leads to integrate programmatic opportunities for funding. Be proactive in regular communications with team members across the organization to continually mine existing and potential fundable opportunities.  Assure program briefs (detailed outline of fundable opportunities) are up-to-date and utilize them to create proposals for funding.

•   Compose and submit fundraising proposals and required reporting in collaboration with essential personnel, adhering to specified requirements and deadlines. Maintain updated annual database of donors for regular communication. Serve as the primary point of contact for Foundation donors to United Way.

•   Manage a grant portfolio of at least 40 active funders.

•   Collaborate closely with the finance department to ensure grant proposals, agreements, acknowledgments, audits, and payments are efficiently managed within set timeframes. Keep precise fundraising records that accurately depict current, pending, and projected dollar amounts.  Provide primary oversight of the Manager of Grants, assuring team coordination toward goal achievement. Serve on the Fundraising and Engagement Department Leadership Team.

•   Demonstrate adaptability and flexibility in a dynamic environment, embracing additional responsibilities as needed to support team success within UWCI's evolving framework and external context. Performs special assignments and other work, on an as-needed basis.

 Education and/or Experience


•  Successful history in building relationships is required.

•  Demonstrated history of writing successful grant proposals and reports is strongly preferred.

•  Bachelor's degree required.

•  At least 4-6 years of relevant work experience required.

•  Knowledge of the central Indiana community and the human service sector is preferred.

•  Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally in a complex organization is preferred.

•  1-2 years of supervisory experience preferred.
